The peacock is a symbol of beauty and transformation. It is first and foremost a solar symbol in Greek mythology, sacred to Hera for the radial shape of its spread tail. The loveliness of its plumage is believed to be derived from the natural transmutation of the poisons it swallows when it destroys serpents. After fastidiously documenting my consumption patterns for thirty days, one area in which I was lacking became evident: sleep. According to the National Sleep Association, most healthy adults need between 7.5 - 9 hours of sleep per night to function optimally.
During the month of September, my average sleep per night was six hours (mean = 6:07, median = 6:00), a full three hours less than the average 20-24 year old female (Bureau of Labor Statistics, American Time Use Survey, 2011). I’m not alone; 1 in 5 Americans gets 6 or less hours of sleep per night.
As such, I decided that a worthwhile takeaway from my cognizant consumption project would be to elevate awareness of the importance of sleep in all facets of functioning and health, relaying my personal experiences – in the context of scientific fact – to the broader community.
Each element in this bed-scape represents a fact or statistic about sleep, either from my personal experience, or from sleep research. My design objective was to create a space that felt inviting, interactive, and familiar, one on which people would feel compelled to learn more about their own habits and seek ways to improve them.
